Apple season is almost over, but not yet There are still several varieties to choose from in the orchard Empire, Macoun, Cortland, Snowsweet, Golden Delicious, and Hampshire Mac. There are also a few pumpkins left in the patch. We also have apple cider vinegar for sale at the stand again. We make it right at the farm from our cider. October 1. 9, 2. 01. Pumpkins are still available for picking in the patch and there are still plenty of apples for picking Macoun, Snowsweet, Empire, Golden Delicious, Hampshire Mac, Cortland, Pomme Gris, and Liberty are the varieties still available for picking. Mc. Intosh are for sale at the stand as well. October 1. 6, 2. 01. Honeycrisp are picked outThe last of the Honeycrisp were picked today. We still have a lot of others for picking such as Snowsweet, Macoun, Empire, Golden Delicious, Cortland, Hampshire Mac, and Liberty. October 1. There are still plenty of apples in the orchard available for pickingHoneycrisp, Mc. Intosh, Cortland, Macoun, Empire, Snowsweet, Liberty, and a number of others everything is ripe are ripe and delicious. We still have a lot of pumpkins in the u pick patch and we make cider donuts fresh every day. October 3, 2. 01. Snowsweet, Empire, and Fuji are now ripe for picking Snowsweet are one of our favorite fresh eating apples with a vanilla ice cream flavor and a rich and firm texture. Empire have a tangy bite with enough sugar to keep you biting for more. And Fuji are the most widely grown apple in the world. They are firm, juicy, and sweet. With the heat last week and the frost this week, the trees have really advanced so that you can pick any variety that you want in the orchard now. Golden and Red Delicious are ready. Northern Spy, Baldwin and Hampshire Mac are ready too. We still have plenty of Honeycrisp, Mc. Intosh, Cortland, Jonamac, Macoun, Liberty, and Freedom available for picking. September 2. 8, 2. Pomme Gris, Coxs Orange Pippin, and Sweet Sixteen are now ripe for picking The only problem is that there are only a handful of Coxs this year. Both the Pomme Gris and the Coxs have a champagne type flavor which make them some of my favorite apples. Sweet Sixteen are a misty explosion of melon and bubble gum, as described by Jacobsen in Apples of Uncommon Character. A must have for those who know them. September 2. 2, 2. Macoun, Freedom, and Blue Pearmain are now ripe for picking Macoun are a favorite of many and are great for fresh eating and baking. Macoun ranges from mildly sweet to sugary sweet during its harvest window and has a fine grained flesh and nice thin skin. Freedom are a relatively tart eating apple and Blue Pearmain are said to have been the favorite of Henry David Thoreau. September 2. Cortland, Gala, Wolf River, and St Edmunds Russet are now ripe for picking We still have a lots of Honeycrisp, Mc. Intosh, and Jonamac available for picking too. Zestar and Gingergold are so sweet and delicious right now and may be picked out by the end of the weekend. Cortland are a large, firm, and relatively tart apple that make my personal favorite pies. Wolf River are also well known for baking and are our largest apple in the orchard with some weighing up to 1. St Edmunds Russet are my favorite fresh eating apple with a complex flavor of Snickers bars mixed with Sour Patch Kids. And Gala are a firm and sweet apple originating from New Zealand. September 1. Honeycrisp, Mc. Intosh,Summer Rambo, and Pears are now ripe for pickingHoneycrisp have become extremely popular and for good reason. They are honey sweet with a nice tart kick to go with it, crisp with slabs that shear, and a large, juicy apple. They are best for fresh eating but are becoming widely used for baking. Mc. Intosh are still a popular old favorite. They are really a unique apple among the Fujis, Braeburns, and Galas of todays market. A smooth skin and chunky flesh with a mild sweet and tart flavor bring back a lot of memories for a lot of New Englanders. I think of flannel, and the first snow, and apple pie next to a wood stove. Summer Rambo are the oldest variety in our orchard dating back to the 1. Rambures, France. They are mostly a baking apple in that they are tart and large enough to easily process. Some enjoy them as a good eating apple. The pears include Bartlett, Potomac, and Seckel. They are firm and green on the tree, but soften and color when left on the counter for a while. September 1. 1, 2. Jonamac are now ripe for picking Jonamac are similar to Mc. Intosh, but slightly more crisp and sweeter. They are our favorite for apple sauce. Zestar are in their prime right now and Gingergold are on their way to full ripeness. Mc. Intosh will be ready for picking by Friday. Jerseymac are now picked out. September 8, 2. 01. Zestar and Gingergold are the main apples available for picking this weekend. Zestar are heading into their juicy, sweet prime right now while the Gingergold are still early and taste a like a sweet Granny Smith right now. There are still a few Jerseymac, but the Paulared, Williams Pride, and Pristine are picked out. I tasted a Mc. Intosh today and they are still tart, so they need another few days to a week to ripen. Long term, the apple forecast looks like Macs ripe on the 91. Cortland ripe 92. Gala 92. 2, Honeycrisp 92. Macoun 92. 7, Snowsweet 1. Empire 1. 01. 5. Of course their are many others that will ripen along with these few that are mentioned. Check out the orchard map on this website. In the lower left corner, the order of ripening is listed and should give you an idea of when other varieties will be ready. Have a good one September 1, 2. We will have sweetcorn available at the stand starting Saturday It has been a long wait, but the first corn has finally ripened. For apples, we will have Zestar just barely starting to ripen this weekend. There are still plenty of Jerseymac and Paulared apples fully ripe on the trees and there are a few Williams Pride and Pristine apples left. Pristine Lemon and vanilla flavor. Crisp and juicy. Williams Pride Mildly sweet. Firm. The best for baking of the summer varieties. Jerseymac Similar to Mac and firmness, skin, and texture, but has an added strawberry flavor. Paulared Similar to Cortland. Tart and firm. Zestar Juicy, sweet, and zesty. Becoming a favorite of many. Has Honeycrisp parentage. August 2. 5th, 2.
